## Qatar at a glance

- **Wallet currency:** QAR
- **Hub:** Doha
- **Portal languages:** Arabic and English
- **Suggested template:** Groups & MICE for event and incentive programmes; Classic for a mixed desk.

## How the trade works

The Qatari riyal has been pegged to the US dollar since 2001, so dollar contracts and riyal sales stay in step. Visitors arrive by air, by road from the GCC and by sea in the cruise season, and most residents are not Qatari nationals. A Doha desk can be selling to cruise passengers, to Gulf visitors driving in and to residents travelling out, all in the same week.

## What operators here are loading

Doha hotels priced around the events calendar, shore excursions timed to cruise calls, desert trips to the Inland Sea sold by time slot, and outbound holiday and Umrah packages for residents.

## Worth knowing

Arabic reads right to left, and each user chooses their own interface language from the 32, which suits an office whose staff come from several countries.

## A peg you can type in

Because the riyal is fixed to the dollar, the usual reason to load a buffer onto an exchange rate mostly falls away for agencies that settle in dollars. Set up the dollar as a selling currency with a rate you type and date yourself, and those agencies see dollar prices that do not wander from one day to the next.

Currencies that float are different. An agency in India or Europe buying in rupees or euros can sit on the platform's daily rate with a buffer of your choosing, which the agency never sees. Each agency's prices, statements and credit stay in its own currency, frozen per booking, while your books stay in riyals.

## Cruise calls and event weeks

Qatar Tourism counts arrivals by sea as their own share of its visitors, with a cruise season that spans the turn of the year, and a shore excursion is a product with a hard edge: it runs on the day the ship is in, inside the hours it is alongside, for as many guests as the coaches hold. Open only the call dates on the tour's calendar, give each option its capacity and time slots, and nothing can be sold for a day with no ship.

Event weeks press on hotels instead. Qatar Tourism runs a business events arm to bring conferences and exhibitions to Doha, and on those dates a room block for one partner agency, released on a day you set, keeps your best rooms for the agency that sells them.

## Selling to residents as well as visitors

A desk that serves residents sells outbound and pilgrimage products that need different handling from a city tour.

- **Umrah and Hajj under licence.** Campaigns in Qatar need a licence from the Department of Hajj and Umrah Affairs at the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs; the Faith template presents them package-first, with the dates and inclusions read before anything decorative.
- **Packages with departures,** a per-person price for each room type and season, extras, and holds if you allow them.
- **Quotes on request.** Switch on quote requests and agents can ask for a group programme; your desk answers with a proposal priced for their tier and currency, which they accept into the cart.
- **A GCC rate where you have one.** A hotel rate plan can be sold only to the markets you name, judged on the agency's country or the lead guest's nationality.
